If you travel to Phuket, you can sign up for a boat tour around the Phi Phi Islands. There are a few stops along the way, though all the boats converge on one island for lunch. Boats line up along the shore, and crowds of hungry, wet people temporarily get to stand on solid ground.
By the way, this was taken about an hour before our boat ran into a monsoon and I nearly drowned. Ah, the memories!
If you’ve seen some of my other photos, you can probably tell I do a lot of walking. However, it’s usually in a city, surrounded by thousands of other people. On one long, sleepy afternoon in Phuket, I went out to a beach in the north. I walked for an hour and a half in that beautiful, isolated splendor before seeing another person. The only trace of human presence was the trail of my footprints stretching back into the horizon. Amazing how quickly things change once tourist season ends…

Hey, fellow Americans, do not adjust your set. That is indeed a bottle of Heinz ketchup, which I came across in a grocery store in Thailand. No matter how far you travel, some brands refuse to be left behind…Of course, I put the ketchup back on the shelf and stocked up on more local cuisine. That’s the point of traveling: new experiences, not the familiar.
