This week’s challenge calls for something abstract, and I remembered something I saw at recently at the Macy’s Flower show. This isn’t just some random flow of colors; it’s a rather cleverly-designed makeup display for Dior. A larger version is viewable here.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Pistol Shot Glass
This week’s challenge calls for something close up, and I remembered taking this photo of a glass pistol during the tequila factory tour in Mexico. All the little imperfections in the cork and the light reflected in the barrel look pretty neat at this angle. Since today is apparently National Tequila Day, I thought it’d be worth posting. Talk about putting the shot in shot glass!
Weekly Photo Challenge: Ghirardelli Cable Cars
This week’s challenge calls for symbols, and here are two of the most prominent ones in San Francisco: Ghirardelli Chocolate and cable cars. Both have a rich and storied history in the city, and are two of the many things people associate with it. I’ll admit that the desserts are delicious, if overpriced due to brand recognition. As for cable cars, well…they’re over-hyped. They’re limited to very specific areas of the city, the tickets are expensive, and the lines are ridiculous. I’ve rode one only once from Aquatic Park to Powell Street, after which I realized it’d be faster for me to walk/hike the route instead of waiting. Once of my great uncles was an architect for Ghirardelli Square, so I find it somewhat interesting. This photo, however, was taken at the mini-store within the depths of the Westfield downtown. Large versions also available here and here.
Lime And Lemon
Just a brief glimpse of an evening Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta…Large version available here.
Scarlet Macaw, Up Close And Personal
Paradise Village shows off their resident parrots every couple of days. You have to keep your distance most of the time, but you can pose with their scarlet macaw after the show. Normally the hotel staff takes your photo and sells you prints – I have one that needs to get framed, in fact – but they were gracious enough to let me get my own close-up shot. Large version available here.
Parrot Profile
There are about half a dozen parrots on display at Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Normally you can only see if then in their cages…unless you know when they’re taken out and having the cages cleaned. As long as you don’t get *too* close, they’re fine with some quick photos. This one was taken so close, you can see my reflection in the parrot’s eye! Large version available here.
Walk The Line
Nothing like a Sunday stroll…on a flower stalk. Large version available here.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Springtime Visitor
This week’s challenge is all about stuff being enveloped. It reminded me of the bees currently visiting my front yard; they buzz amongst the flowers, digging deep for the pollen within. It’s easy to imagine the little critters being wrapped up in the petals of a huge flower. Large version available here.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Rusty Nail
This week’s challenge is all about forces of nature, so I thought I’d focus on something common, but overlooked: Oxidation. Rust forms when iron comes into contact with things like water and oxygen, and even more so with salt water. This chemical reaction happens everywhere, perhaps most famously with the Statue of Liberty; it was made of copper, but years of ocean weather gave its surface a blue/green patina. If you want something a little more local, try finding an old nail…like this one on my back porch. Large version available here.
Mother’s Day Watermelon
Whenever we travel together, my mother and I always stock up on fruits and vegetables. Good food makes a good trip, and Mother’s Day is no different! Large version available here.
