Weekly Photo Challenge: St. Peter’s Square Panorama

This week’s challenge is all about gatherings, so I thought I’d jump slightly ahead of my travel writing and give you guys the first glimpse my time in Europe. St. Peter’s Square sees thousands of visitors every day. It’s designed for people to gather and feel embraced; the columns look like open arms, beckoning you to come closer. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate the intricate architecture and sense of scale. This place is much, much bigger than it looks; it took about a dozen tries to get this panorama to work. Weekly Photo Challenge: Sutro Beach Panorama

It was a nice day and I had some free time, so I decided to explore a place I’d never seen before. I took the bus to the literal end of the road – Geary Boulevard, specifically – and ended up at Sutro Baths/Point Lobos. This is at the distant northwestern tip of San Francisco, and more remote than most touristy places. Aside from the long ride, it takes a little climbing to get down to this beach. Definitely worth the effort, though! Larger version is viewable here.

Municipal Pier Panorama

Fun fact: I’d never been on San Francisco’s Municipal Pier until about a month ago. Lots of fishermen, bikers, and gulls. A shame that large portions of it are fenced off due to disrepair. Great view from the opposite end of Aquatic Park, though. You can see the Balclutha, the Transamerica Pyramid, and even Coit Tower in the distance.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Depth, Or: Kilauea Panorama

This week’s challenge is all about depth. It reminds me of the afternoon I spent at Kilauea on the Big Island. It rained for about 90% of the time I was out there, but the skies cleared up long enough for a glimpse of the volcano’s sprawling range and depth. This was taken at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

View From Kohala Highlands

During my trip on the Big Island, I happened to travel along Kohala Mountain Road in the Kohala District. This high, winding highway stretched through seemingly endless fields and hills, resulting in epic vistas like this. On the far right is the west coast of the Big Island, and Mauna Kea looms in the clouds on the left. It’s so awesome, I decided to make this the blog’s new header.
