This week’s challenge is all about landscapes, which are some of my favorite things to photograph during my travels. This was especially true for the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, which is a serious contender for the most peaceful, serene place I’ve ever visited. Geographically speaking, this was the furthest I’d ever been from home. It’s still unspoiled by heavy tourism, but that’s not going to last once word gets out of how beautiful it is. Just look at that water! A larger version is viewable here.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Mediterranean Afterglow
This week’s challenge is all about harmony, and I instantly thought of my last day at sea. The cloudy skies, the colors, the chill of the open Mediterranean…it all came together for an unusual – but utterly gorgeous – moment in my adventure. A larger version is viewable here.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Sun On Salerno, Italy
This week’s challenge is all about optimism, so I thought I’d skip slightly ahead of my travel log and give you a preview of what’s coming next. This is the city of Salerno, which is part of Italy’s world-famous Amalfi Coast. On the morning I took this, the sky was dull and overcast; I was worried our tour to Pompeii might be canceled due to bad weather, and started planning accordingly. After a little while, however, the sun broke through the clouds and illuminated the city like a spotlight. It grew brighter as the clouds drifted slowly – but inevitably – down the coast. Not all problems can fade away like that, but a little patience goes a long way. A larger version is viewable here.
Weekly Photo Challenge: At Land’s End, San Francisco
This was taken at the beach below the Eagle’s Point Labyrinth, about three miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s a brief – but strenuous and quite vertical – hike away from the Legion of Honor. This isn’t the kind of beach you visit to relax. Be sure to bring a good pair of shoes and even better balance; falling off the cliffs here is deadly. Also, come early; I only had about half an hour before the rising tides came close to sweeping me out to sea! Larger version can be viewed here.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Dog in Surf
For the next entry into the muse challenge, here’s another shot along the same coast in Nuevo Vallarta. I think everyone should walk along the beach at least once in their lives; it’s peaceful, quiet, serene…and you never know what you’ll run into in the waves. Kind of like this friendly stray that was enjoying the day; I was worried about approaching him, but he only followed me for a bit before going back to his own fun in the sun.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Wave In A Bottle
Do not adjust your set; that really is a wave suspended in a kind of glass! One of the exhibits at the Exploratorium, the Confused Sea shows how the wind affects the motion of the ocean. You can change the speed and direction of air, thus creating some choppy water!
Cee’s Odd Ball Photo Challenge: At The Edge Of The World
For this week’s Odd Ball Challenge, I thought I’d post an iconic area from Puuhonua o Honaunau National Park, Hawaii.
View From Kohala Highlands
During my trip on the Big Island, I happened to travel along Kohala Mountain Road in the Kohala District. This high, winding highway stretched through seemingly endless fields and hills, resulting in epic vistas like this. On the far right is the west coast of the Big Island, and Mauna Kea looms in the clouds on the left. It’s so awesome, I decided to make this the blog’s new header.

Photography 101: Landscape – Pailoa Bay, Maui
Today’s Photo 101 is all about landscapes, and Maui is a godsend for nature photographers. There are so many places, I actually had trouble choosing one photo! I ultimately settled on this shot from Pailoa Bay, near the end of the Road To Hana. And no, those colors were not photoshopped or filtered. Those brilliant green plants, sparkling blue ocean, and black beaches are exactly what Pailoa Bay looks like. I actually teared up a bit when I first saw it; this niche of unspoiled nature still remains one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Nighttime, Or: Kihei Lifeguard House
This week’s challenge is all about pictures taken at night. I don’t have many of them, but I remembered something I took on my phone during my last night on Maui…
